The Ukrainian School of Arts were invited to perform at the Ukrainian National Association's (UNA) Resort 'SOYUZIVKA' during Labour Day Weekend 2003. The SOYUZIVKA resort is nestled in the Catskill mountains of upstate New York. It is a place where old world charm embraces modern traditions and where young and old are welcomed to experience the ambience and hospitality of the season.

On behalf of the Ukrainian School of Arts I would like to thank the Board of Directors, and all those responsible, for the performance invitation. I would also like to thank the entire Management and Operational team including the hospitality, kitchen, security, and facilities personnel for such a wonderful experience and kind consideration. A special thanks to Nestor Paslawsky, Sonia Semanyszyn, Olesia Guran and Andrij Sonevytysky who contributed so much towards our arrangements and performance opportunity. Thank you also to anyone I have unintentionally overlooked.

Our "Zoretsvit" and "Ukraina" Ensembles travelled to Soyuzivka utilizing the bus charter services of Denny Bus Lines and their skilled driver Fred. Arriving late on Friday, August 29th, the crew decided to venture out to the Zabava. During their brief walk to the Veselka Hall they were drenched by an unexpected downpour of rain. Extremely wet, but not discouraged, we listened to the melodic sounds of the "Luna" Band who entertained and delighted our small but enthusiastic group.

Our first performance at Soyuzivka, a "teaser" highlighting talent for the Sunday afternoon showcase, took place Saturday on the Patio at 2:00. Fata Morgana, the featured entertainment, performed various musical arrangements. The dance performance (including such numbers as Carpathian Suite, Sverbylivka and Hulianochka) was cut short due to a rain shower. Shortly after this brief performance, the dancers were transported for a special guest appearance at the nearby CYM-A oselia in Ellenville. Upon returning to Soyuzivka, the dancers were warmly greeted with an exquisite dinner in the main dining hall. The group then prepared for an evening of fun and frolics. Many ventured to the Zabava (featuring Fata Morgana) and danced to the early morning hours.

Sunday's performance, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the Veselka Hall, began with the Master of Ceremonies, Roman Kyzyk, welcoming the audience and introducing Mr. Stefan Kaczaraj (UNA President). Marusia Rad, on behalf of the Artistic Directors, introduced the Ukrainian School of Arts, described the school's program and provided a brief historical overview of the school and its organization.

The Dance Program consisted of: Pryvit, Sverbylivka, Hulianochka, Vertivka, Mazury, Kuban, Skakucha, Viter and concluded with an invigorating Hopak. The performance also highlighted the "Aria" Vocal Duet --- two talented girls: Andriyka Wasilewski and Oresta Babyuk, who performed three songs: V Chuzheni, Zelene Shyto and I Love You. As a special treat, the Master of Ceremonies interviewed one of the young dancers, Dominica Tomczyk. The audience became familiar with what this young girl experiences as a dancer with the Ukrainian School of Arts. Having danced for several years, Dominica explained that she attends 2-hour weekly dance rehearsals/practices. At times, in preparation for a special performance or for extra technical attention, a second practice may be added on the weekends.

Towards the end of the dance program, the Master of Ceremonies introduced the Artistic Directors, Oleksandra (Lesia) and Valeri Movchan. As talented choreographers and instructors, Roman asked them what are some of the key ingredients that contribute to the ensemble's performing success. Lesia and Valeri Movchan clearly stated that a dancer's enthusiasm, hard work and skill development relies on parental dedication, understanding and cooperation. They acknowledged all of the dancers who work hard and attend practices on a regular basis. Additionally, they noted the need for discipline and explained that parental involvement and assistance in this area and in organizational matters has contributed toward the school's success.

As the program concluded, Marusia Rad, on behalf of the Ukrainian School of Arts, thanked the UNA Directors, Management and Staff for their invitation and superb hospitality.

As the weather was superb, the dancers quickly changed and jumped into the inviting, clear blue waters of the Soyuzivka pool. It was a splash filled, fun afternoon that concluded with a comfortable evening Zabava to the sounds of Fata Morgana and Tempo. As a special treat the group also held an especially warm bonfire complete with roasted "kobasky" and creamy marshmallows.

Special thanks to all who contributed to a wonderful Holiday weekend!
(. . . . . a perfect end to Summer . . . . .)

We look forward to another memoral adventure at Soyuzivka!
